By the Koi's breathing and defecation ammonium gets in the water. Part of it is converted into ammonia. With the help of oxygen Nitrifix' nitrosomonas bacteria transform ammonia into the somewhat less poisonous nitrite. Subsequently the nitrobacter bacteria - again with the help og oxygen - convert nitrite into far less poisonous nitrate.
